This kind of packaging prevents the carriage from being subjected to damaging stresses -should the carriage locking mechanism become loose- during shipment.

I write about this aspect of packaging because in the last eight months I have purchased 26 vintage typewriters from the Internet and three of them were irreparably damaged during shipping: one because it was subjected to three separate shippings before it reached me and one -amazingly-had the carriage locking mechanism unbolted from the main frame.

Fortunately EBay and Etsy gave me refunds after I supplied pictures of the extensive damage.
